Dressed for Adventure - Vol. 2

A while ago, we talked about the first steps of our design-process for our heroine Coria and since we only covered the beginning of the process, here's the next part of our heroine's journey through the world of adventurous fashion.

In part one, we told you about our character designer's Maren Schildmeyer's first sketches and how we decided on a pants-shirt-combination. With this settled, the next thing to decide on was a color-scheme. Once more, Maren created a couple of different suggestions.

We quite liked these first three designs, but all of them were bound to cause problems with the Game Boy display. You remember the sprite of Super Mario? Well, there is a reason, he's wearing overalls! Otherwise, due to the few colors and low pixel-count, it would be impossible to see his arms moving which would in turn lead to a very stiffly animated sprite.

Therefore, Coria had to follow suit. Not wanting to put her into plumber's overalls (which might actually be an interesting idea, but we'll leave that to the fan-artists for now...), we decided she should wear something with sleeves of a different color that the rest of her top. And since Maren is an excellent artist, they had three more designs for us to check out.

Just like above, we really liked all of these designs. #5 with its green-tones is great. But well... characters in green clothes often bring another Nintendo-hero to mind and furthermore, with the rather dark colors, we were a bit afraid she might not stick out in front of some of  our murkier backgrounds. The colors of #6 are nice, but once more, the sleeves - not too sprite-friendly.

Sketch #3 however... that's already pretty close to what we wanted. The bright red would look nice on the Game Boy Color screen, the white sleeves make for good visibility, the only thing here we were skeptical about were the bright, loose pants. But no problem - we asked Maren to combine the shirt and the top of Coria #3 with the pants and boots from design #1 and... well, in our next fashion-update, we'll let you know what happened then!
