Dressed for Adventure - Vol. 3

If you read our previous devlog-updates, you may remember how we decided on a general costume, a color-scheme and a basic outfit for our heroine Coria.

Character-illustrator Maren gave us a great choice of different color-schemes and costume-variants to chose from. And guess what? After we did, they came up with a new batch of iterations on that specific design... and that new batch had some huge implications on Coria's final look.

These four designs were used to narrow down what we wanted to go for. Please note, that Coria a) still has her braid (the decision to cut her hair came a bit later) and b) is still wearing the more loose-fitting pants. Bear with us just a little longer - we´ll get there. Before that however, we thought a lot about these designs.

So, what do we have there? #1 is the design we previously pointed out as our favorite, and #2, #3 and #4 are iterations. For #2, Maren removed the white shirt under the tunic. That makes Coria's outfit quite a bit more airy, but it didn't sit quite right with us. We had this feeling that we're on to something, but that wasn't where we wanted to go. And besides, wearing just the tunic might just feel a bit uncomfortable.

For #3, the tunic was lenghtened for a bit, making it look a bit like something a medieval knight might be wearing on top of their chainmal. An interesting design, but not quite right and a bit anachronistic for our game's setting.

#4 goes all late 80s / early 90s - remember all those weird bathing-suit-armors RPG-heroines such als Rosa from Final Fantasy IV or Celes from Final Fantasy VI used to wear? That was our first association with this design. But while that might work well for a sprite consisting of only a few pixels, we decided against it for various reasons - it's not the look we wanted to go for, it seems uncomfortable and also not exactly what Coria would want to wear for her adventure.

That´s when another thought came up. We like the white shirt, but the shirtless look does have a certain appeal to it. Why not got for some... asymmetry? Stay tuned for spectacular next part. And while you´re waiting for that one: Why not give our playable demo another try? With your knowledge about the design-process of our main character, you might see her sprite in a whole different light?
